A trailblazing circular economy project to advance the development of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) has secured a finalist place at the global Energy Institute 2021 Awards, and HSSMI has been praised for contributing to the project’s success.
HSSMI is working in partnership with project leaders, Wilson Bio-Chemical Ltd on Waste-to-Wings, a project to future-proof and scale up the production of greener jet fuel by using circular economy practices and aerospace industry derived waste as the primary feedstock to manufacture sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).
The Waste-to-Wings SAF project has impressed the judging panel of the Energy Institute Awards and secured Wilson Bio-Chemical (WBC) a nomination in the Low Carbon category. Waste-to-Wings explores how SAF can be produced from bioethanol, produced from micro-organisms found in Municipal Solid Waste (MSW), e.g., the contents of the office rubbish bag, average canteen waste bin, or commercial skips.
HSSMI’s Circular Economy Team has collaborated with WBC to develop the decarbonisation solution, working across the aerospace supply chain to map and build a circular economy framework for the project. Specifically, engaging with waste producers within the entire downstream supply chain, forging links with airports, airlines, air freight forwarders and lower-tier stakeholders.

Attracting over 120 entries across 29 countries from some of the world’s biggest organisations in industry, the awards recognise the very best projects in the global energy environment.
The overall winners will be announced at a virtual online ceremony on Thursday 25 November 2021 where business leaders, energy sector peers and innovators will gather to celebrate the year’s best energy industry projects. Watch this space for news from the ceremony.
