We offer our members and customers three different products and services: Engineering Services, Collaborative Research Projects and Membership. Both collaborative research projects and membership are a catalyst for engineering services that have a higher margin.
Engineering Services – bespoke services for individual customers. Members have a preferential access to these resources. Engineering Services are projects which are carried out on a commercial basis if: a) confidentiality or IP considerations do not allow a collaborative research project, and b) time constraints require immediate intervention.
We also offer a range of innovative business models, workshops, scanning and document conversion services as part of its product and development portfolio.
Collaborative Research Projects – We take part in and builds consortia for publicly funded collaborative research projects and aims to include our members in these projects. Current sources for funding are Advanced Propulsion Centre, Innovate UK, European Commission and Zero Waste Scotland. Other sources are under development including EPSRC and Local Enterprise Partnerships.
Membership – We offer membership to our customers. There are three categories of membership: strategic, project and network. Membership benefits are cumulative i.e. strategic members enjoy the benefits of ‘Network’, Project as well as Strategic membership.
Network members engage with us and can make use of our facilities and attend our events run for members’ benefit.
Project members include companies and organisations that have a technology or process that can be applied through our work, they are key collaborators and add value to us and in return gain value through collaborative working. Often these members are involved in one or more collaborative projects.
We offer Strategic Members a bespoke strategy day to develop a technology cycle plan, dedicated access to the management team and preferential access to engineering services.
We organise regular membership events such as: a) A Leadership Forum, b) Research Forum as a public event to show case our capabilities. Membership Fees and in-kind contributions reflect the level of activity and contribution both to and from that member and are reviewed on a regular basis.
We are a new and innovative organisation that is adept and responsive. Through a combination of applied research and responding to customer needs we offer a new opportunity for partnership that compliments Universities, High Value Manufacturing Catapults and the private sector.
Building Our Programme Portfolio – Digital Engineering and Test Centre (DE&TC)
HSSMI is committed to growth. To develop this we are engaging in a series of larger programmes. The first of these is the Digital Engineering and Test centre (DE&TC)
The DE&Tc is a unique joint industry / academic centre of excellence on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in London. It will develop and use virtual engineering tools and techniques to accelerate the development, test and manufacture of automotive propulsion systems.
As an APC spoke, DE&TC also brings specific functional, technological and regional capability to the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC) network helping to deliver the reality of a Propulsion Nation.
For more information please see www.detc.co.uk
Income streams of HSSMI are:
- UK and European research funding
- Income from Engineering Services
- Membership income
- Income derived from new processes and products
HSSMI does not receive any direct government funding. Any surplus derived from HSSMI’s activities are re-invested in further research to benefit UK manufacturing.
Collaborations include academia, solution providers and Original Equipment Manufacturers across HSSMI’s four themes: Virtual Engineering, Circular Value Chains, Data Analytics for Resource Efficiency and the Manufacturing New Technologies.
HSSMI is a multi-academic partnership. It’s partners include Loughborough, UCL, Cranfield and Southampton Universities.
